Hank was the son of Henry Haines Alderman (1863-1904) and Edith May Kelty (1870-1953). He is descended from Oregon pioneering families on both sides. On the Alderman side, his father and an uncle were sheriffs of Tillamook County, Oregon and his Kelty grandfather was a sheriff of Yamhill County Oregon. Hank's grandmother Sarah Maria (Scott) Kelty was the daughter of John Tucker and Ann (Roelofson) Scott who were also the parents of Harvey W. Scott, longtime editor of the Oregonian and Abigail Scott Duniway, women's rights activist and suffragette.
Hank married Hazel Anona Hake on January 17, 1937 in Yakima, Washington. She was the daughter of Ernest Rexford and Lena (Sigurdson) Hake. Hank and Hazel had two sons Henry Haines III and James M.K.
