Mary (Gouveia) Aguiar, 77, of 144 Pamela Ave., Groton, died Saturday morning, Sept. 19, 2009, at the Groton Regency.
Mary was born May 18, 1932, in San Miguel, Azores, Portugal, the daughter of Guilherme A. and Maria (doCarmo) Gouveia.
She was married to Horatio "Roy" M. Aguiar in San Miguel, on Jan. 20, 1954. Mr. Aguiar died in 2002.
Mrs. Aguiar had worked for many years and retired from the housekeeping department of the Groton Regency. She was a member of Scared Heart Church in Groton for over 50 years where she had been active in many areas.
The family would like to thank the staff of Onocology and Hematology Associates of New London for their especially good care and to George and the volunteer drivers from the American Cancer Society for their assistance.
She is survived by her son, John M. Aguiar and his wife, Dawn, of Groton; two daughters, Susan Reimer and her husband, Eugene, of Yorktown, Va., and Donna Strittmatter and her husband, Martin, of Barnegat, N.J.; and also her Fall River, Mass. family including two brothers, three sisters, many nieces and nephews, four grandchildren, Michael and Lauren Reimer and Nicholas and Sara Strittmatter, and a step-grandchild, Zach Motsch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Sept. 22, at Sacred Heart Church in Groton. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Stonington. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton.
In appreciation and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 238 West Town St., Norwich CT 06360.
