NEW BEDFORD, MA — Bertrand D. Allain, Sr., 85, of Dartmouth and formerly of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, after a long period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Jacqueline (Brodeur) Allain and son of the late Henry and Louise (Laflamme) Allain.
He was born in Acushnet and lived most of his life in New Bedford until moving to Dartmouth a few years ago. He was a WW II Navy Veteran and served aboard the USS Oglethorpe. He was formerly employed by Brodeur Machine Shop as a machinist until his retirement.
In his leisure time he enjoyed running and restoring antique clocks as well as being a collector, most of all he loved being with his family.
Survivors include his three sons, Bertrand D. Allain, Jr. and his wife, Janet of Mattapoisett, Clement P. Allain and his wife, Debra of New Bedford and David A. Allain of Lakeville; three daughters, M. Frances Martin and her husband, Richard of No. Dartmouth, Jacqueline A. Hopp and her husband, Richard of So. Dartmouth and Louise A. Athaide and her husband, Paul of FL; two brothers, Robert C. Allain of Dartmouth and FL and Henry M. Allain of CT; a sister, Marcelle Arruda of Marlboro; nineteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Jane Allain of Berkley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Michael H. Allain and brother of the late Maurice, Andre, Gerald and Jack Allain.
Visitation will be this evening only 5-8 at Rock Funeral Home. Funeral from the Funeral Home on Thursday at 9:30 AM followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Joseph-St. Therese Church at 10:30 AM. Interment MA Veteran National Cemetery, Bourne.
