|Death: ||May 20, 1863|
(personal note: Malachi was born in 1830 and died at the age of 33. When I ordered his gravemarker, I was excited and mixed up the numbers - his marker is wrong)
Malachi was born in Princess Anne County, VA (present day Virginia Beach) in 1830 and died in Richmond, VA on 20 May 1863 - a victim of the Civil War. It's speculated that Malachi's parents were Peter Lovett Murden and Pemmy McClanan Murden. Before he was a soldier, Malachi was a farmer in Princess Anne County.
Malachi enlisted in the Confederate Army on 9 April 1862 where he served in the 6th Virginia Infantry under the leadership of General William Mahone. During Malachi's enlistment, Mahone's Brigade saw action at the battle at Malvern Hill, the second battle at Manassas and the first battle at Fredericksburg.
Malachi was wounded at Manassas on 30 August 1862 when he was shot in the chest. He was sent to a hospital in Petersburg, Virginia where he eventually recovered enough to return to his regiment. His wound, unfortunately, never completely healed. Infection soon set in and an abcess formed over the wound. He was sent to Winder Hospital in Richmond, Virginia where he developed Typhoid Fever and died on 20 May 1863. Malachi was buried in an unmarked grave in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
Malachi was only 33 years old and left a young widow, Sarah L Murden, five young children: Claudius, Pemmy, William Henry, Mary Jane "Mollie", Joshua and a younger brother, Peter L. Murden. Another daughter, Mary, preceeded her father in death. Son Joshua died on 28 Sep 1864 of unknown causes. Malachi also had three other brothers and a sister (all younger) whose dates of death are unknown.
Though she lived another 51 years after Malachi's death, Sarah never remarried. She died in 1914 and is buried in London Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Virginia Beach, VA.
A grave marker was dedicated and military honors afforded Malachi at a ceremony hosted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Virginia Division, and held in Hollywood Cemetery on 3 November 2007 at which approximately 40+ descendants gathered to honor their ancestor.
