Carlene Virginia Hartung Bagley, born Sept. 30, 1917, eldest daughter of Odie Lee Tibbit and Henry Robert Hartung, sister of Cecilia Hartung Posey and Robert Lee Hartung, wife of Thomas D. Bagley, mother of Nancy Virginia Bagley Freels (Mrs. Jim Freels) and Thomas Ross Bagley; and loving grandmother of Bradley J. Freels, Shelli Virginia Freels, Brian T. Bagley and wife, Allison, Michael Bagley, Robin L. Bagley, Casey F. Bagley, Matthew G. Bagley and great-grandmother of Brooke Freels, Taylor Freels and Ivy Virginia Freels, and aunt to a host of nieces and nephews, joined her Heavenly Father on Sept. 13, 2008 at the age of 90 from the city of Martindale.
Growing up in Caldwell and Hays counties, Carlene developed a keen sense of the out of doors, enjoying the flora and fauna about her, treasures she never tired of viewing, especially her "little" birds that daily visited her feeder, the lovely crepe myrtles and iris along the driveway, and the grand magnolia trees in her yard which created a pleasant loving atmosphere for her family and friends.
While living on the Kasch Breeding Farms where her father was foreman and helping in the store operated by Mr. Hartung and John Mauldin in Reedville, Carlene developed a love and appreciation for people which carried over to 25 years serving as elementary school secretary for the San Marcos CISD.
Carlene flourished while living in Martindale where she attended school, participating in the state tennis meet, graduated with academic honors from San Marcos High School, worshipped at the Martindale Methodist Church with her family and became fully aware of community and area politics as her father served as County Commissioner of Precinct 3.
She also met the man, Thomas Daniel Bagley, that she would marry on June 28, 1940, and cherish for more than 60 years. Thomas, a seed breeder, and Carlene made their life together in Martindale. They raised a family, participated in the activities of the Martindale and San Marcos Methodist churches, served as secretary and treasurer of the Martindale church and were active on the church board.
They put in the Martindale Water Supply Corporation with the help of John Mauldin and Tom Brown Martin, and for many years Thomas served as president of the board while Carlene did all the secretarial and bookkeeping work for that operation, including getting out the hundreds of bills required each month. Both were certified water supply managers by the state of Texas.
Thomas served as president of the Martindale School Board and Carlene invested her efforts in the children of Travis and Bowie Elementary schools in San Marcos for more than 20 years. Their life together has been one of love of God, love of family and friends and community service.
Carlene was active in the Texas State Teachers Association, the Association of School Secretaries and the Hays County Retired Teachers Association until she became full-time caretaker for her husband, Thomas, a job which she lovingly and painstakingly accomplished with her usual trust in God and pleasant, caring manner and highly organized routine.
Carlene Virginia Hartung Bagley lived her life as daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, aunt, niece and beloved friend in Christian love with humility, grace, dedication and unwavering devotion.
