----------------------

Stephen Hales (1849) died at Cordell, Crisp, Georgia...While I do not know the year he removed to Rexburg, Idaho, his history records that he had a photographic studio...Quite a number of years later Mr. Hales left Rexburg and went to Rome, Georgia, where he worked in an art studio. After his marriage to Jessie Anderson, he established a photographic business in Cordele, Georgia. (Veta May Atkinson Brown)

S.C. Hale Passes Great Divide - Well known photographer answers summons of death after long illness - Funeral this after noon. S.C. Hale, for a number of years a resident of Cordele and well-known photgrapher, died Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. [?] W. Hatcher, in this city at the age of 55 years.[He would have actually been 66 years of age at the time of his death.] He is survived by a widow, and relatives who live in native state, Iowa. Mr. Hale had been in declining health for more than a year, caused from heart trouble...Funeral services were conducted from the residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock and interment occurred at Sunnyside Cemetery. Rev. J.H. Cold, paster of the First Baptist church, officiated at the services. Mr. and Mrs. Hale came from Rome [Georgia] to make their residence here. Mrs. Hale's father Representative G. D. Anderson of Floyd County, is a resident of that city. Mrs. G.H. Gould, of Rome, arrived in the city Tuesday night to attend the funeral. (The Cordele Dispatch, Wednesday, July 5, 1916)
----------------------------

Mrs. Albert Burningham has just received word of the death of her father, Stephen Hales, the well known artist and photographer and builder of Hales Hall, which occurred in Rome, Georgia, on the 4th of July. He died of chest dropsy after a very brief illness, He had always enjoyd the best of health. He was 73 [actually 66] years of age and had lived in Rome and Cordelle, Georgia about ten years. After leaving Bountiful, he resided in Columbus, Ohio, about two years and in Key West Florida, about a year before going to Rome, Georgia. He had planned a trip home just before he was taken ill. He is survived by John Knowles Hales, of Salt Lake, Mrs. Charles Hulse of Rexburg, Idaho and Mrs. Albert Burningham of Bountiful. His son, Stephen Hales, was in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake and has never been heard from since. (Davis County Clipper, January 26, 1917)
----------------------------

Note: Cleo Page alters this [Davis County Clipper] obituary considerably in her writing. She adds references to Cordele, Georgia as being the place of death, adds reference to Rexburg, Idaho, and adds more survivors, eliminating the last sentence about Stephen Hales [who actually died in 1942.] The additions of Rexburg and the revisions about survivors are consisten with facts...After Stephen's death, Jessie moved to Fort Valley, Georgia where she again opened a studio. There she met Andrew Houser, age 63, a widower and flour mill operator. They married. However, he died in 1929, and she remained a widow until her death in March 1961. (Kim R. Burningham)
