Mary Newton Brown Swinfield Hutchinson Cook Bate came to the United States from England when her daughter Harriet was an infant. On Harriet's LDS Baptism record, Harriet's father is listed as Arthur Brown. There is no record of marriage for Mary Brown and Arthur Brown.

When Mary came to the US she went to Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania she gave birth to Sarah Elizabeth Hutchinson, daughter of James Hutchinson.

Mary and James Hutchinson then went to Wyoming and settled in the mining community of Almy. Mary and James had two more daughters while living in Almy, Charlotte and Mary Ann. Mary also gave birth to a still born child in 1892.

To the knowledge of the family there is no marriage record of Mary and James. It is said by the family that when James was killed in a coal mine explosion in 1895, Mary did not receive any compensation; as she had no proof of marriage.

In 1896 Mary married George Cook who had also been a coal miner who settled in Almy. Mary and George lived on a ranch on what was known as Knight, Poverty Flats and eventually Hilliard Flat.

Interestingly enough, two of Mary's daughters married two of George's sons. Harriet the oldest daughter, married George's son William. Sarah the second daughter married George's son George F. Cook.

George Cook passed away in 1916 and in 1919 Mary married John Bate who had previously been married.

It was said Mary was a rather hard woman, but she did not have an easy life. She out lived three husband's that is if she was married to James. She was a stout woman in her later years and my grandmother told me she was a hard worker. I am certain she was, as my grandmother Harriet was a very hard worker herself.

We do know that Mary was in touch with two of her sisters after she left England. We have correspondence from her sister Jenny Smith Brown, Hinds, Green, Bakes. Jenny went to Tasmania and passed away there. She wrote letters to her niece Harriet's daughters. Jenny is buried in Deloraine, Tasmania with her husband Frederick Bakes. Jenny's findagrave memorial is number 186005771.

We also have a post card from Mary's sister Maria who remained in England.
