ELKHART -- Esther R. (Balyeat) Stevens, 84, of Elkhart, entered eternal life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 4:32 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at the Elkhart Hospice House.

She was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Elkhart to Benjamin and Wealthy Miller. She was married to Daniel Floyd Balyeat for 43 years until his death in 1988. She married John Stevens on Oct. 12, 1991, in Elkhart.

He survives along with one son, Dan (Sue West) Balyeat of Union, Mich.; two daughters, Diana (Jim) Everett of Bristol and Karen (Duane) Thompson of Elkhart; two stepsons, John (Marsha) Stevens of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Bryan (Michelle) Stevens of Versailles, Ky.; and two stepdaughters, Ethel (Stan) Ramsey of Elkhart and Gayle (Ken) Sparks of Kalamazoo.

She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Pauline Morehouse of Elkhart and Katherine Barney of Baldwin Park, Calif., survive. She is also survived by a special friend, Eleanor Miller of Elkhart.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Carl E. Miller of Elkhart.

Mrs. Stevens retired from Miles Laboratories in 1993. She had worked at C.G. Conn from 1954 to 1971. After leaving C.G. Conn, she and Dan moved to Nogales, Ariz. They returned from the area in 1972.

She will long be remembered as a loving and godly woman who prayed faithfully for her family. She was a great source of encouragement to her grandchildren. Every week, for several years, she would send each a card of encouragement. She loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed reading, shopping, traveling and spending time in the sun.

Esther was a member of Beulah Missionary Church for 59 years. She taught Sunday school for 17 years. Her passion in life was to share her faith in Jesus Christ.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Beulah Missionary Church, 57595 C.R. 17, Goshen, with her grandson, Pastor Jason Thompson, officiating. Burial will be in the Olive West Cemetery, Wakarusa. Visitation for Esther will be Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart, and one hour prior to the services at church.

Memorials may be given to the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, 2010 W. Chester Pike, Suite 300, Havertown, PA 19083 or to the Centers for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend.
