FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Hazel Fossum Arndt, 89, of Fort Collins, Colo., passed away on July 3. She was born on May 31, 1920, in Oxnard, Calif., to Thorvald and Hilma (Hallberg) Fossum. Hazel moved frequently in early childhood, attending elementary schools in Minneapolis, Minn.; Long Beach, Calif., and Fairmont, Minn., where she graduated high school. She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., where she majored in public education.
In her youth, she found employment as a shelf stocker in her mother's neighborhood grocery store. She also worked for Woolworth's, a factory assembly line at the Fairmont Canning Factory, and during her college years, she cared for three young boys in a private home.
Hazel's career as a teacher began in Fosston, Minn., where she taught junior high business, eighth-grade math, English and history. She taught for a brief time in Winnebago, Minn., where she met her husband, Robert F. Arndt. Hazel was the librarian at Lesher Junior High School in Fort Collins, Colo., for many years, retiring from the Poudre R-1 School District in 1982.
Hazel maintained a full schedule of volunteer work, serving as the Campfire Girls Council President for six years, the librarian of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church for 20 years, High Plains Chapter of the Lutheran Library Association, member and chairperson of the Fort Collins Interfaith Council, Habitat for Humanity, Friends of the Library, AAUW, Fort Collins Area Interfaith Council, and the Poudre Retired School Employee Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.
Hazel is survived by sisters, Dorothy Trembley of Englewood, Colo., and Lorraine Personius of Fairmont, Minn.; her four children, Jim (Nancy) Arndt of Loveland, Colo., Susan (Ken Farrar) Usel of Fort Collins, Colo., Ron (Tricia) Arndt of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Rik (Katherine) Arndt of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren, Jodi (Arndt) Lessman, Matt Usel, Emilie and Jon Arndt; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Anna Lessman.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Fort Collins, Colo.
