Born in Dallas, Texas in 1885 to Harry C. Boatner and Carrie Ann Eaton. His mother died in childbirth when he was one or two years old, then his father left him to be raised by his grandparents, his mother's family, and moved out of state living in Jacksonville, FL for several years. It is unknown where his father went afterward or when he died. His mother and younger sister are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Dallas, Texas with his material grandparents. His father owned a plot in that cemetery, but there are no cemetery records that he is buried in it. James was raised in Dallas and also spend some time in Massachusetts where his mother was from. At a young age he became a printer and worked for publications and newspapers in Dallas, Texas. Later, he moved to Beaumont, Texas where he worked for the newspaper there. After marrying, he eventually moved to Ft. Worth, Texas and worked for the Ft. Worth Star Telegram for many years as a printer. His son, Charles Knox Boatner followed in his father's footsteps in the newspaper business and became a reporter, city editor for the Star Telegram. James moved to the Handley area of Ft. Worth, and after retirement passed away in 1965.
