Glenn was serving as the third assistant engineer on board the Rawleigh Warner, an American tanker that put to sea on June 21, 1942 from Smith's Bluff, Texas (Beaumont) in route to Port St. Joe, Florida with a cargo of 39,000 gallons of gasoline. Two days at sea on June 23,1942, traveling without escort, at 6:11 A.M. the Rawleigh Warner was struck by two torpedoes fired from a German U-boat, the U-67. Flames quickly engulded the entire ship and within ten minutes was gone with her entire crew. In command of the U-67 was Guenther Mueller Stockheim, on his fourth patrol having left Germany May 21, 1942. The U-67 was sunk by American aircraft dropping depth charges on July 16, 1943 in the Sargasso Sea.
