New South Wales, Australia

"Mr. Samuel James Appleby, who died in the St. George District Hospital recently, was assistant district officer in New Guinea. He was on holiday leave from Rabaul. In 1910 Mr. Appleby joined the Scottish Rifles, gaining the rank of sergeant. When the Scottish Rifles were disbanded he joined the new corps, in which he remained until the end of 1914. He was then transferred to the Garrison Military Police, gaining promotion to sergeant. In 1918 he enlisted for active service in Rabaul, again as a private, where he rose to corporal in 1919. A year later he was promoted to lieutenant, when at his own request he was discharged from service. He then joined the administrative staff of the Mandated Territory, where he was made Deputy District Officer. He was a Justice of the Peace of New Guinea and Queensland, and a sub-inspector of the native police. He is survived by Mrs. Appleby and four children. The interment took place at the Woronora Cemetery with Masonic and Orange Lodge honours." [SMH Saturday 31 May 1930, page 19.]
