Birth: May 6, 1841, England
Death: Jul. 3, 1909
Whangarei, New Zealand

Son of Samuel and Mary Ann Calkin, Samuel jr., was, by 1851 residing with his grandparents, and was raised on his musical ability. By the time of the Civil War, Samuel was already a resident of the United States, and enlisted as landsman in the Union Navy at Brooklyn, New York, April 24, 1864. He was sent aboard the receiving vessel there, the NORTH CAROLINA for his initial induction into the ways of a seaman, before being sent aboard a vessel at the North Carolina sounds. After his term of service had expired, he was discharged on May 17, 1865, and took up a seafaring life. Aboard a whaling vessel, he arrived in New Zealand, and settled in the Auckland district, going to Whangarei, where he resided for some years. His family consisted of five sons and three daughters, and he was in receipt of a United State government pension for his service during the Civil War. He taught the violin, but was also proprietor of the Coffee Palace, of Whangarei. In 1907, he was one of the claimant's to a fortune belonging a New Jersey merchant, though the outcome of this claim is uncertain.
