Carolyn Thompson Arvin Age 72 of Loogootee, Indiana died at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Loogootee Nursing Center in Loogootee, Indiana. Death was due to cancer instead of her real wish which was to go while riding on a boat in Small World at Disney World.
She was born on December 6, 1938 in Daviess County Indiana to Paul and Beth (Gough) Thompson. On May 9, 1960 she married Matthew L. Arvin and he preceded her in death on February 28, 1994.
She was a 1956 graduate of St. John's High School in Loogootee and a 1959 graduate of Nazareth School of Nursing at St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville, Kentucky. She had worked at both Daviess County Hospital in Washington and Memorial Hospital in Jasper as well as the offices of Francis Gootee, MD, James Poirier, MD, Robert Woodall, MD, the Loogootee Nursing Center and Preferred Home Health Care. Carolyn loved babies and had worked as a nanny in the Indianapolis area as well as in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and most recently in Jasper, Indiana for Drs. Nick and Kristin Werne.
She was a resident of Loogootee for over sixty-five years where she was very active in church, community and school affairs. She also served as a Brownie Scout leader and was a former member of the Delta Tau Chapter of Tri Kappa. For many years she wrote, directed, produced and choreographed the Lions Club Laugh-IN. In 2007 she was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award by the Loogootee Schools Alumni Association. Carolyn initiated the Ecumenical Choir, along with her good friend Carolyn Strange Arvin and served as it organist throughout it twenty-year existence. She has also been an organist at St. John's Catholic Church and St. John's Lutheran Church in Loogootee. She was actively involved in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, serving as publicity coordinator its first eight years in Martin County and then as a volunteer for the Caring Friends sponsorship. Her other interest including writing, which included many articles for area newspapers as well as a weekly column in the 70' and 80's entitled The Ketchup's In The Bathroom. Too she enjoyed scrap booking and vacationing in Disney World. She was actively involved with her lottery club, the LSWC, and is survived by her "Little Sisters", Gloria Hart, Rita Schnarr and Rosie Billings, keeping in touch with many friends via e-mail and maintaining an e-mail prayer line.
Carolyn moved to Carmel, Indiana in 2006 to be nearer to members of her family. She remained a life-long member of St. John's Catholic Church in Loogootee and while living in Carmel attended St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fishers where she served as an organist.
She is survived by one son, Phillip John and wife Gayla Arvin of Germantown, Tenn.; four daughters, Mrs. Jeffrey (Beth Ann) Lliff of Indianapolis, IN, Mrs. K. Matthew (JoDee) Curtis of Carmel, IN, Kara Lynn Arvin M.D. of Spokane, Washington and Mrs. Stephen (Kristine) Penn of Overland Park, KS; eleven grandchildren, Benjamin and Katherine LliffZachary and Lindsay Arvin, Keeli Jo, Kipton and Kyle Curtis Regan and Thompson Penn, Philip and Lauren Poirier. She also leaves her special "Nana" family, Nick, Kristin, Ava Claire and Tessa Werne.
She is Proceeded in Death by her parents, Paul and Beth (Gough) Thompson, and husband, Matthew L. Arvin A Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee. Burial will follow in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Whitfield, Indiana.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Brocksmith Funeral Home.
Carolyn was not a fan of flowers and request that you send balloons only or make contributions to the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary of the Woods; or the St Vincent DePaul food pantry in Loogootee or Mass intentions at St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee.
