Gladys Lee Berlin

Gladys Lee Berlin went peacefully to be with our Lord on Friday, September 06, 2013, in Kilgore, Texas. Born on July 24, 1921, Gladys was the fifth daughter of Wesley and Chessie Wilson Miller. She spent the first seven years of her life on a little farm she called "the little brown house." Her family moved from there in 1928 and occupied various farms in Hunnewell, MO in Shelby County. Gladys attended Applegate, Deer Creek, Clapper and Bar schools and graduated ninth grade from Lakenan School. She attended Monroe City High School and Hunnewell High School where she completed her education. Gladys married Clyde Edward Berlin on October 16, 1937. Her first son, Floyd, was born on August 23, 1938. She gave birth to seven other children over the next sixteen years. Gladys was employed 28 years at Henderson Produce Company, was an inspector at Motorola in Quincy, Illinois until 1975, then moved on to Diemakers in Monroe City, where she was an inspector until 1989, when she retired. After retirement she worked out of St. Louis doing demos at various shows. Gladys was a member of the United Methodist Church in Monroe City. She was also a member of the VFW Lodge in Monroe and a former Moose Lodge member in Moberly and Hannibal, MO. Volunteered at the Monroe City Nutrition Center for 15 years. She loved to travel to Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and even took a bus trip to Washington D.C. Gladys was known for her love of dancing and playing cards. She started the very successful "pitch" card tournaments at the Monroe City Nutrition Center and competed in these for more than 13 years. These tournaments are still being held today. Gladys was an election poll judge for four years, nominated as Volunteer of the year at the Monroe City Nutrition Center in 2001 and handmade each of her seven children a cathedral window quilt.

Gladys moved to Longview, Texas in 2008 to be near her children and family. She was peceded in death by her parents: four sisters, Dorothy Ravenscraft, Hazel Young, Lucille Miller, and Jewel Zieger and one bother John Wesley Miller: husband Clyde in 1971; daughter Sheila in 1948; son Herman in 2009; three grandsons..Herman II-1966, Harold-1996, Eddie-2002 and great grandson Jessie-2012. She is survived by sons & daughters-in-law Floyd and Judy Berlin; Wesley and Dorothy Berlin; Mary Lou Berlin, all of Longview, TX; Harold Berlin and grandsons, Dillion and Austin Brown of Gladewater, TX; son and daughter-in-law John and Mary Berlin of Marble Falls, TX; daughter Carol Berlin Piatt of Amarillo, TX and son and daughter-in-law Joe and Chris Berlin of Springtown, TX; 21 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services for Gladys are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 11 at the United Methodist Church, Monroe City, MO and burial at Andrews Chapel in Warren, MO. The family will receive visitors from 5-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10 at Garner Funeral Home of Monroe City. Active Pallbearers will be John W. Berlin II, Joe Berlin, Jared Berlin, Wesley Berlin, Jeff Botkins and Phil Mann. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tim Kendrick, Dennis Long, Bill McClintic, Carl Beaver, Lloyd Neudecker, Jim Schnitzler, Ed Schnitzler and Dennis Spalding. The family requests that memorial by made in Gladys' memory to the Monroe City Nutrition Center, which she loved or a charity of your choice.
