Excert from David G. Akers's obt: David G. Akers was born in Tompkins county, NY on 1-11-1822 & died in Barry, IL on 4-30-1890, aged 68 years 3 months & 19 days. When quite a small boy his parents emigrated from NY state to Cincinnati, OH, which at that time, in the then slow, rude way of travel was thought to be the far west, going the 1st part of the journey in sleighs until they reached the Allegheny river, thence taking passage on a raft down the rive to Cincinnati. He lived there until age of 15, when his parents emigrated to the Military tract, or what is now Adams count, IL, landing where now stands the beautiful & prosperouse city of Quincy, a small hamlet numbering a few log cabins, finally settling about a mile west of Kingston, at which time the life struggle of the pioneer began in earnest, manfully battling with the thick forest for years.... He remained a citizen of Adams county until 3-1-1875, when he moved to Barry, until the time of his death.
