Birth: Dec. 17, 1808
Ipswich Borough
Suffolk, England
Death: Oct. 26, 1894
Middlesex County
Ontario, Canada

David Allen was born 17 DEC 1808, St. Mary Stoke Parish, Ipswich, Suffolk County, England; died 26 OCT 1894, at his home in Mosa Township, MIddlesex County, Ontario. He was the son of Simon Allen and Dinah Webb.
David Allen married Harriet Gooderham, 25 DEC 1829 or 1830 (?), Ipswich, England; the daughter of Thomas Gooderham and Lydia Stokes. Harriet Gooderham, born 18 JUL 1809 in either Ipswich or the area near Scoles (possibly the Parish of Bungay), Norfolk County, England; died 9 JUN 1887, Mosa Township.
In April 1844, the following families immigrated to Canada:
1. David Allen and his family.
2. Jude Allen and his family
3. Thomas Gooderham (single)
4. James Gooderham and his family
5. Lydia Gooderham Burton and her family.
Jude Allen was an older brother of David; the Gooderhams were brother and sister of Harriet Gooderham Allen.
According to family records, they sailed from the port of Liverpool, England (APR 1844); the vessel arrived at Quebec, Canada (31 MAY 1844). The name of the vessel was not recorded.
David Allen and family continued their travel into Ontario, possibly arriving by ship at the port of Hamilton; then continued by stage coach to Woodstock, and later traveled to London, Middlesex County (birthplace of daughter Mahala). By 1851, they had established a residence in Mosa Township, near the community of Cashmere.
Cashmere was a small village (population 100, 1860) located on the floodplain of the Thames River. It was abandoned in the early 1900s (the dam was destroyed in 1902); the land returned to original farm land by 1930. Today, Cashmere is a ghost town.
David Allen was a cabinet maker, lived in a log house and was the owner of 40 acres - 25 acres cultivated for farming, 15 acres wild or wooded. In about 1857, the Allen farm was one of the first locations where test wells were dug for oil.
After David died in 1894, the farm became the property of Charles (son) and Ishmael (grandson).
