Imogene Augusta ('gene) Acklin passed away peacefully at Heatherwilde Assisted Living in Pflugerville, Texas on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the age of 99. She was born in Pflugerville on September 23, 1910 to Annie (Pfluger) and Charles Christian (C.C.) Kuempel. 'gene was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville. Throughout her life, she supported Immanuel and several other churches in the communities where she resided. She attended the Pflugerville schools and continued her education at Southwest Texas Normal-College, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas. She taught school for a short time before marrying Ernest Acklin in 1931. Together they ranched and operated a grocery store in Manor, Texas and spent much of their free time hunting, fishing and attending rodeos. After Ernest's tragic death in 1959, 'gene was employed at E.M. Scarbrough & Sons Department Store in Austin. She proudly served her community as a volunteer with the St. David's Hospital Auxiliary, as a Travis County election official and as secretary for the mayor of Manor. 'gene married Ernest's older brother, Edward, in 1972. She and Ed loved their time together living on the shore of Lake Travis and enjoyed hosting many memorable activities at their home. Due to Ed's failing health in 1976, they moved to a new home in Round Rock, where Ed passed away in 1980. 'gene continued to call Round Rock home and took a particular interest in attending Texas A&M athletic events with friends. In 2006, she moved to Heatherwilde Assisted Living in Pflugerville. She remained active until her death, participating in numerous activities including dominoes, bingo and the Senior Olympics. Throughout 'gene's life, her warm heart, generosity, and many acts of kindness made her beloved by family and friends. She enjoyed gathering family for celebrating her birthday in what came to be called the "maize party" and kept up the tradition of her parents hosting the family Christmas Eve dinner. 'gene was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her four sisters and her five brothers. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Kuempel of San Antonio; nephews, Max Kuempel and wife, Gretchen, Charles Kuempel and wife, Gloria of Pflugerville, Chester C. (Buddy) Nelle and wife Barbara of Elgin, Claude Kuempel and wife, Gwen of Ledbetter; nieces, Frances Parten and husband, Robert (Bobby) of Marlin, Nellene Hester and husband, Lawrence (Hank), Patricia Wolff and husband, Herbert of Round Rock, Charlene Tiemann and husband, Kenneth, Anne Kuempel, and Teresa Kuempel of Austin, Sarah Conn and husband, Jack of Lubbock, Lynn Gates of Taylor, Donna Lane of San Antonio; many great-nephews and nieces; great-great nephews and nieces; great-great-great nephews and nieces; and numerous other family members and friends; all of whom will greatly miss her. A funeral service celebrating 'gene's life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 500 Immanuel Rd., Pflugerville, Texas. Officiating will be Reverend Tom Kesselring of Immanuel Lutheran and great-nephew, Reverend Matthew Kuempel of Kennewick, Washington.
