Eva Cecile Smith, better know as "Babe" was born in Northbridge, Mass. in 1906. She is one of eighteen children, nine girls and nine boys. She had a sister named Marie Caton who lived in New Bedford Mass.

Eva left her family roots in New Bedford Mass in 1934, and came to California. She made her home in Long Beach, California where her and her husband Joseph Smith raised tow daughters, Alice and Georgette.
The early thirties and through the forties were a period of low incomes for most people, but Eva and her husband managed to buy a home and support their family on a Navy man's pay and later his retirement check.

After her daughters married the family grew to include six grand children and eleven great grand-children. Eva was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Alice Martin, in 1978.

After the loss of her husband, Eva was self sufficient and even in her advanced years maintained her home and personnel business. She loved her family and all the grandchildren and was quick to extend a helping hand to them when needed.
