Birth: May 13, 1921
Los Angeles County
California, USA
Death: May 31, 2011
Maricopa County
Arizona, USA

After spending his first two school years in Pomona, the family moved to Glendora, California, in 1928. Lee spent the rest of his public school years in the Glendora area. He was active in sports, music, drama, debating, and clubs at Citrus Union High School. He played the trombone in the high school band and Bill Potter's dance band. During his senior year he had an after-school job driving a milk truck at his uncle Ted Roberts's dairy in West Covina. After graduating from high school, he went one year to San Diego State before transferring to Pomona College. He had two fun summers in 1940 and 1941 working at lodges in Yellowstone National Park and entered Pomona College in 1941. After Pearl Harbor he signed up for the Navy V-7 program which enabled him to graduate before being assigned to officers' candidate school. He graduated in 1943 with a major in physical education. He loved sports and was an outfielder on the college baseball team. Prior to leaving for officers' candidate school in Chicago, he became engaged to Doris Lee. During a 10-day leave upon his graduation and commission, he drove across country to get married. After a whirl-wind trip, he flew back to Virginia to report for duty on an LST. He spent the bulk of his time in the war in England, participating in the D-Day landing at Gold Beach. He was discharged from the service in 1946 and spent several years working in the construction business. Lee and Doris had three children, raising them at their home on Claremont Heights Drive in the midst of the lemon groves in the northern part of Claremont. They lived in Claremont from 1950 through 2006, at which time they moved to Mesa, Arizona, for health reasons. At the age of 37, he decided to enroll in the Claremont Graduate School's elementary intern program to become a teacher. He had especially enjoyed his experiences as a Boy Scout leader which led him to want to become a teacher. He taught and was a counselor at El Roble Junior High School in Claremont. He was appointed principal at Oakmont Elementary School in 1968 and Condit Elementary School in Claremont in 1970. After nine years being principal at Condit, he retired and became a part owner of the College Press in downtown Claremont. He was a member of the Claremont Congregational Church and its treasurer for many years. Family, sports, and church were a big part of his life.
