James was the son of Marvin Alto and Gladys Mae (Brown) Bailey. He graduated Newcastle High School in 1950. He and Barbara "Bobbie" Oldham were married November 6, 1959 in Elbert, Texas.
He was a painter and carpenter and had worked for Snow Aeronautical and Coachman Industries. He also worked for Young County Precinct 3 for 21 years, retiring in 1995.
In his younger days he loved to roller skate. He was an avid Cowboy's football fan and coached Little League baseball for several years. He enjoyed fishing, playing dominos and was a pecan grower, winning numerous awards. He had a great sense of humor. He loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally. He was a member of the Southside Baptist Church and was a past member of the Olney Cemetery Board. He was a very generous man, willing to help those in need, but always wanting to remain anonymous.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hubert and Christine Oldham, and two brothers in-law, Herman Mahler and Glen Stout.
At time of death survivors included his wife Bobbie Bailey of Olney, one son, Jim Bob Bailey of Olney; one daughter, Mindy Cuba and her husband, Matthew of Lakeside City, Texas; two sisters, Marjory Mahler of Olney and Golda Cawthon and her husband, Ralph of Wichita Falls, Texas; one brother-in-law, Harley Oldham of Olney; one sister-in-law, Annette Franklin and her husband, Richard of Throckmorton, Texas; five grandchildren, Ian, Ezra and Zakk Bailey and Wyatt and Grayson Cuba.
