Before World War II, Roy worked for Detweiler Nursery in Pine Castle, Florida. Roy joined the Army after war was declared on Japan. He was a member of the 11th Airborne Division, 511th Parachute 11th Airborne Division, 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Batallion, US Army, WWII. He received the 3rd Bronze Star for participation in a Combat Zone from May 28 to Nov. 8, 1944. Some of his military records were destroyed by fire, but those records available show that he made a parachute combat jump on Aparri, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 23 June 1945 and made another combat parachute jump at Tagayta Ridge, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 3 February 1945. "On June 23, 1945 the 1st Battalion and Companies G and I, boarded troop transports, from the 317th Troop Carrier Group, at Lipa Airstrip and dropped by parachute near Aparri as part of the Gypsy Task Force. "Uncle Roy told me that he made 4 combat jumps: Lehte, Lusan, Corrigador, New Guinea. He also made a bunch of landings from the sea. The 511th was the toughest paratrooper unit there was." -- telephone conversation with Richard Glen Wilson. After the war he became an office manager for Suwanee Life Insurance Company.
