From Susan McPhedran:

Ann had 14 children, of which 13 survived infancy. Grandma was not sure but she thought the 14th had been a twin to one of the Dan's. Her family arrived in 1843 according to the 1901 census.

In 1861, she and her sister, Isabella, were listed with the family with a notation that they were absent from home. Ann was living with the Thomas Hawkins family (C1035, Dist 1, P4, L11), presumably working as "the girl". Mr Hawkins was a mill proprietor who must have been quite prosperous as the family was living a a two story brick home. This would have been quite a contrast from the 1 story log home that she had been sharing with her parents and many siblings.

"Esibelah" Douglass was living with John Hawkins, Jr, his wife, Elisabeth and daughter, Elisabeth Ann (C1035, dist1, p3, .4). Her older sister had probably arranged for her to get the job. I believe that John Hawkins, Jr and Thomas were the sons of John Hawkins, Sr, who was the land agent for much of that part of the Huron Tract.
