Mario Alfonsi 29-March-1919 to 19-April-2010 Mario was born on the 29th of March 1919 to Torello Alfonsi and Romea Marchesan in Chioggia (Venice), Italy. He came to America as a prisoner of war in 1942, and was encamped at Defense Depot (DDO) in Ogden UT. As a prisoner, he collaborated with the United States and was assigned to an Italian Service Unit (ISU) which helped send supplies to our U.S. Soldiers overseas fighting WWII. Then in 1946 when the War ended, all the Italian Service Units were sent back to Italy. Mario was in the Italian navy; a submariner who was one of seven men out of forty-two who survived a depth charge attack while serving onboard the Italian submarine GLAUCO. The same British destroyer that attacked the submarine picked up the survivors at sea 5-days later floating on pieces of the wreckage. PBS aired a documentary titled "Prisoners in Paradise" by Camilla Calamandrei which followed four Italian prisoners of war, and Mario and Anna were one of the four couples involved in the film project. He married Anna L. Ropelato on the 23rd of October 1946 in Chioggia (Venice), Italy and returned to America in September 1947. He became a U.S. citizen in the early 1950's. He worked for Continental Baking Company (Wonder Bread) for 36 years and made many friends. He always appreciated the support and friendship from these managers at work; Mr. Kuhlman, Mr. Milon Smith, and Mr. Oliver Larson. He enjoyed taking care of the yard, and was always tinkering with something around the house to keep himself busy, or helping out at the farm in West Weber. Mario is survived by his wife Anna, two daughters Delphia Thomas and Denise Schmutz Mc Mann, and a son Shawn. He has four grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great grandson. Two of his grandsons are currently in the U.S. Army serving tours of duty in Afghanistan. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. A Catholic Rosary will be recited at 6pm Thursday at Larkin & Sons Mortuary, 496 – 24th Street, Ogden UT, followed by the viewing at 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 23rd at 10am at St. James the Just Catholic Church, 495 N. Harrison Blvd, Ogden UT, with a gravesite service at 12:30pm at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in Salt Lake City, UT - Cemetery Main Entrance - 4th Avenue at T Street in Salt Lake City, UT – northern most mausoleum.
