Sidney married Ingrid Mjaatvedt on August 25, 1942. They were blessed with four daughters. On December 4, 1977, after 35 years of marriage, Sid lost his lovely wife to cancer. In June of 1981, Sidney married Mary Ida Nickerson.
Sid served a long and productive life in the military sector receiving many awards, decorations and recognitions for excellence were a part of his achievements. Many assignments stateside, 33 months in Europe during World War II, then he participated in the Korean Conflict. While stationed on the Isle of Capri, Sid was given a very special honor as he was assigned to drive for General Dwight Eisenhower. In 1945, he was reassigned to the United States; then became an Army recruiter for the region that included the state of Utah. After 17 years, as a recruiter in Ogden, Utah, Sid retired from the US Army in 1966 with a total of 27 years. After his retirement, Sid went to work for Job Corp, where he supervised young men.
On August 17, 1977, Sidney made a decision that changed his life forever. He submitted his life to Jesus Christ. He was always a great person to know and have around, but from that point in time he became a powerful testimonial to every life he touched.
Sidney is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ida Cates; daughter, Carin (Wayne) Bills of Grand Junction, CO, Sylvia (Ken) Humphery of Greely, CO, Kathy (Barney) Conway of Rawlins, WY, and Dianna Dunn of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lowell and Vernon; and two sisters, Mozell Smith and Oletha Staten.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 5, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at the Harvest Christian Assembly, 358 W. Buena Vista, Washington, UT. There will be a viewing Friday, December 4, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Spilsbury Mortuary, and also Saturday, one hour prior to services at the Harvest Christian Assembly. Interment will be held Monday, December 7, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the Washington Heights Memorial Park, Ogden, Utah.
