The following information was taken from a Giersch Family History by Sister Crescentia Giersch in 1976.
William Peter Giersch, the son of pioneers Stephan and Amanda Jane (Snyder) Giersch, was born July 22, 1869. He was sixteen months old when his mother died, leaving his father with three children to raise alone: Jane Cecelia, Nancy Ann, and William Peter. Until their father remarried, an Aunt Nancy Snyder Giersch, wife of Stephen's brother Peter Jr., assisted with the care of the children.
William received his schooling at District #3, as did Elnora Spohn, who was born and reared within two miles of the Giersch homestead. He and Elnora were married August 29, 1895, in St. John's Lutheran Church Parsonage, Salina, Kansas; and together they raised a family of three sons and three daughters: Oliver, Cecil, Clarence, Lola, Edith and Laura. Later they cared for and raised a foster son as well.
While William had no musical training he loved music especially church hymns and gospel songs. He often played the organ and sang for his young family. His children attended the same District #3 school where he served on the school board for twenty years. He was kind and gentle and always ready to give assistance to anyone in need.
After more than 45 years of farming, William and his wife Elnora retired to Salina, Kansas where they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary August 29, 1952. William died a few months later and rests in Gypsum Hill Cemetery at Salina, Kansas.
