Norma L. (Sims) Culbert, 94, of Bloomington, died on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at IU Health Hospice House. She was born Jan. 2, 1919, in the little town of Whitehall, in Owen County, the fifth daughter of seven children, to Roy and Lula (Gross) Sims. She attended grade schools in both Owen and Monroe counties, graduated from Bloomington High School in 1936 and attended Indiana University. She was employed in various offices and spent 32 years as an office assistant for RCA of Bloomington, retiring in 1932.
She married Paul Culbert, a native of Pennsylvania, on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1936. To this marriage were born two lovely daughters, Sherry Lynne and Vicki Rae. Norma and her husband lived in their home in Bloomington for a total of 44 years, then after Paul's death, in 1988, she continued to live in this same home a total of 64 years, having moved there in 1944.
After retiring from RCA and after Paul's death in 1988, she felt the need to minister to other people through volunteering at various places, the two main ones being the Bloomington Hospital and the Opportunity House. She was a charter member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was organist for twenty years. She was also involved in their various other activities of the church.
Her survivors include her two daughters, Sherry Bland of Solsberry and Vicki Zike of Bloomington; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Wendell Sims and Devon and Margaret Sims, all of Bloomington; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband to whom she was married 51 1/2 years; four sisters, Mildred Dunbar, Mary Hackler, Dorothy Mann and Shirley Smith; and two sons-in-law, Kenny Bland and Kenny Zike.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4201 W. Third St., in Bloomington with Rev. Frank Van Allen officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the church from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on the day of the service.
