Headstone states he died in his 64th year, which should mean he was 63 years ? Months and ? days at time of death, and should put his birth between October 1663, and October 1664.
George Baldwin was the son of John Baldwin (1619 - 1681) and his 2nd wife Mary Bruen Baldwin (1622 - 1670). Sources conflict on his birth year.
According to the book "Baldwin Genealogy", published in 1881, George was born in Milford, CT, and moved to Branford CT in or before 1686. He was a blacksmith by trade. He joined the local church in 1693, and by 1715 was a Deacon. The author states that George was born "in Milford, CT, it is said, in 1662" and that George & Deborah had at least ten children: John, Phebe, Israel, Elizabeth, Deborah, Martha, Daniel, Rebeckah, Noah, and Zillah.
Records indicate that he married Deborah Rose in 1690 in Branford CT. They remained in Branford where George died October 26, 1728.
I am still researching George and his daughter Martha Baldwin. Martha married Isaiah Butler. At this point I am stuck on Martha & Isaiah's son Jonathan. I found his birth record, but am still trying to prove whether he is or is not the SAME Jonathan Butler who was the father of the William Butler who married Bathsheba Hathaway in Homer, NY. I am also trying to determine the identity of William Butler's mother.
7-21-2013: I received an email from Amy Sue Connolly ([email protected])which stated in part that George Baldwin was born 13 June 1665 in Milford, New Haven, CT. I have requested her source info for this. 9-5-20 I have received another hint to change full date of birth to June 13, 1665. To date, I have not been able to find birth records supporting this. If anyone has birth or baptism record that shows full birth date, please let me know.
Per Baldwin Genealogy (pg 304), George was also reported to have been born in 1662. This source also states that daughter Martha married Josiah Butler, but that was corrected (on page 1048) in the 1889 supplement to the original book. It is certainly possible that the birth year of 1662 is not correct.
