'Mayor Ed Boone

Spruce Pine Mayor Ed Boone died at 1:30 p.m, Tuesday, Oct,23, 1962, after a short illness. Mr. Boone, 76, had been mayor since 1955. He was first elected mayor in
1939, after serving seven years as vice mayor and chairman
of the board of aldermen. He served until 1942 when he resigned due to business pressures and did not run again
until 1955.

Mr. Boone has been credited with establishing a well
managed town through strong government and a highlight of his administration was a visit by Richard Nixon when he was vice president.

An active member of Central Baptist Church, Mr. Boone also
was a Master Mason and a Vesper Masonic Lodge. He raised Hereford cattle as a hobby in his later years.

Mr. Boone was one of the major developers of the feldspar mining industry in the Mitchell County area and was active in the business for over 40 years.

He began as a blacksmith in 1913 and by 1926 was general
manager of Consolidated Feldspar Corp. He retired and be-
came a consultant in 1952 when the corporation was bought by International Minerals Corporation.

A member of a pioneer family, and a distant relative of Daniel Boone, he Was the son of Samuel and Julia Davis Boone of the Rebels Creek Community. He was first married in 1912 to Miss Dorcia Jarrett, who died in 1940. Seven years later he married Mrs. Bessie Young Robinson who survives. Also surving are four daughters, Mrs. Rom Sparks of Charlotte and Mrs. Charles Hickey, Mrs. Elmer Cline and Mrs.Paul Wil1is Jr. of Spruce Pine; two sons, Clarence Boone of Spruce Pine and Roy Boone of Asheville; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Howell of Rt. 3, Bakersville, and Mrs. Allen Honeycutt of Rt.3, Burnsville; two brothers, Harry Boone of Washington, D.C. and Fred Boone of Rt. 3, Bakersville; 18 grandchi1dren and six great grandchildren.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Central Baptist
Church. The Rev. Neils Larsen and the Rev. Joe Ervin officiated. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery. Pal1bearers were Claude Parker, Arthur Buchanan, Tay]or Puckett, Wren Tolley, Frank Watson and Warren Pritichard. Masons conducted graveside services.

Hononary pa11bearers were George Greene and David Blevins, aldermen and employees of the town ,of Spruce Pine, and
members of his Sunday School class. Ladies of the church were flower bearers.

Webb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
