Charles Thompson "Charlie" Altman, 79, of Canoe Ripple Road, Sligo, died suddenly of natural causes Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at his residence. Born March 9, 1922, in Sligo, he was a son of Marvin H. and Carrie Myers Altman. He was a 1942 graduate of Sligo High School. Mr. Altman served with the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate third class from 1942 until 1946. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal for his participation in a number of engagements. He was employed with his father in the Altman Lumber Co. and then retired from Crawford Furniture of New Bethlehem. Mr. Altman was a member of the Clarion County Rod & Gun Club of Knox. He attended Callensburg Church of God. Mr. Altman enjoyed gardening, tinkering, hunting and fishing. He was married in Knox to the former Martha Louise Claypool, who died June 22, 1969. Surviving are five sons, Miles F. Altman and his wife, Pati J., of Shippenville, David A. Altman and his wife, Renee, of Knox, William M. Altman of Baltimore, Md., Derek R. Altman and his wife, Amanda, of St. Petersburg, and Mark K. Altman and his wife, Beverly, of Sligo; one daughter, Sheryl D. Donaldson of Sligo; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Altman was preceded in death by a son, Charles L. Altman, November 1978; a granddaughter, Sarah Marie Altman, Sept. 28, 1981; one great-grandson, Camaron D. Coffey, Nov. 15, 1997; and a brother, Henry Altman. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Rimersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Korona A. Say, a Church of God minister, officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Sligo, with military honors accorded by the ceremonial squad of the Rimersburg American Legion and VFW.
