FRANK GROENEVELD, age 81, of Crystal Falls, died Monday (Nov. 5) at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born May 21, 1926 in Norway, Michigan, the son of the late Floris and Anna (DeGroot) Groeneveld. He graduated from the Norway High School in 1945 where he had represented the State of Michigan 4-H congresses in Chicago and Washington, D.C. and received a merit scholarship to Michigan State University.
He received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Michigan State Univeristy in 1950, a Master's Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1954 and did graduate work at Marquette University. Frank taught 8th grade English in the Stambaugh and West Iron County Public Schools systems for 40 years until his retirement.
Active in community affairs, Frank had served on the Crystal Manor Board, Crystal Falls City Board of Review, Iron County Allocation Board, Forest Park Board of Education, Iron County Jury Board, Iron County Housing Commission, Iron County Human Services Board, and the Harbour House Museum Board. He was also a member of the Crystal Falls Rotary Club, Michigan and National Education Associations, and Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. He had served as a District and Regional Forensic Coach and Judge and had been active with the Crystal Falls Annual Variety Shows.
Frank was a very devoted member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church where he was involved in the C.C.D. teaching staff, member of the church council, eucharistic minister, and had served as the editor of the Guardian Angels Centennial Book. He was the producer of Father Joseph Gondek's Golden Jubilee Celebration, was a member of the Iron County Ultreya, and served on several Roman Catholic Cursillo teams at Marygrove Retreat Center.
Frank was honored as the Crystal Falls Lions Club Citizen of the Year in 1982, received the E. Burr Sherwood Vintage Democrat award in 1997, and the Iron County Museum Volunteer Award in 2004.
He married the former Margaret Zeleznik and she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by 4 infant children, 9 brothers, John, Dingamon, Floris, Jr., William, George, Charles, Henry, Albert, and Caesar, and by 2 sisters, Gertrude and Anne.
