CHARLTON, Frances Rike, Age 87, of Nashville, passed away March 6, 2009. She was born July 3, 1921 in Paducah, KY to Lawrence V., Sr. and Flora Alice Howse Rike, and then raised in Williston, TN. She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, E. Dorris Charlton, Jr., a former funeral director with his father, E. Dorris Charlton Sr. with Roesch-Johnson-Charlton & Co. of Nashville; daughter, Constance R. Charlton; brothers, Lawrence V. Rike, Jr. and James H. Rike; and son-in-law, Tony A. Chavis. Mrs. Charlton was a devoted mother and grandmother, and is survived by her son, E. Dorris Charlton III (Lisa) of Decatur, Alabama; daughters, Frances H. Charlton-Chavis of Laurinburg, NC and Elizabeth C. Lindsey (Scott) of Brentwood, TN; grandchildren, Neal S. Charlton, Kathryn "Katy" Charlton, Madeleine "Maddie" Lindsey and Alexander "Alec" Lindsey.

Mrs. Charlton was a 65 year member of First Baptist Church, Nashville. She was a former President of the volunteers at Baptist Hospital and was active in other civic organizations. Mrs. Charlton was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling after retiring as a homemaker.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Nashville with Dr. Frank Lewis and Rev. Charles E. Worrell officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Good News Bible Class at First Baptist. Memorials may be made to the , 2000 Charlotte Pike, Nashville, 37203; First Baptist Church, Nashville, 108 7th Avenue South, Nashville, 37203; or Camp Smile-A-Mile (Alabama's Program for Children with Cancer) P.O. Box 550155, Birmingham, AL 35255. Visitation with the family will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and also prior to the service on Monday from 12-2 p.m. at First Baptist, Nashville.
