On Nov. 23, 2006, Clyde Acord, 101, Windsor Estates, formerly of 2412 N. Bell St., went home to heaven in St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by children and grandchildren.
He was born in McLeansboro, Ill., on Jan. 14, 1905. In 1926, his family traveled by horse and wagon from Illinois to southeast Missouri. There, he met his wife of 75 years, Ester (Lewis) Acord, who preceded him in death. They were married on Christmas Eve 1927, riding by horseback to their wedding.
After moving to Kokomo in 1951, he was employed at Continental Steel until his retirement in 1968. Most of his children were born during the depths of the Great Depression and were raised during the most difficult of times, but he always provided well for his family. He was a man of high moral character, who was well respected by everyone who knew him.
He was an active member of his church most of his life. He was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sylvia and husband Ed Nolley, Peru, and Verlene Rogers, Converse; two sons, William E. and wife Kathy Acord, Waupecong, and Norman and wife Judy Acord, Peru; 14 grandchildren, Larry and wife Diane Nolley, Peru, Richard and wife Marcie Nolley, Kokomo, Jeff and wife Theresa Nolley, Austin, Texas, Sheila and husband Bill Reese, Kokomo, Patricia Acord, Kokomo, Dallas Acord, Kokomo, Chuck and wife Mary Rogers, Delphi, Zandra and husband Tim Kiefer, Daytona Beach, Fla., Kim and husband Don Keen, Rockford, Ill., Sherri and husband Charles Brunner, Rockford, Ill., Bradley and wife Tammy Acord, Rockford, Ill., Jenetta and husband Tim Warhurst, Rockford, Ill., Tammy Acord, Syracuse, and Leon Acord, Los Angeles; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ester Acord; and also by one son, Clyde Acord Jr.; two brothers and one sister.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ellers Mortuary, 3400 S. Webster St. Grandson Chuck Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
