Born to Adam & Anna Maria (Wind) Brand. Brother of John Adam Brand (1833-1912) of Portsmouth, Ohio. Spouse of Nancy Jane (Walker) Brand, married 54 years. Five children. Volunteered for Civil War duty in August 1861, serving in the Union Army, Company B, 25th Infantry Regiment, Indiana Volunteers for the duration of the war. Surname shortened from "BRANDT" to "BRAND." German/Dutch descent. Died at home, 90, of "Organic heart disease" per death certificate. --- *SOURCE: "Stowaway story" was told by Jerry Charles Brandt (1940-2010), one of Jacob's great-great-grandsons.
