Herman Louis Christoph was born to Christoph Johann Hermann and Sophia Marie (Giegel/Gugel) in Kassieck, Gardelegen, Saxony, Prussia. He was baptized in the Evangelisch Kirche, Kassieck, Gardelegen, Saxony, Prussia on February 9, 1850. In this same church, he was confirmed in 1864. The church baptism records say that he was given the name, Johann Christoph Hermann Bachenger, born 9:00 PM; the son of the Master Blacksmith. The family changed the spelling to Barchenger and some families spell it Barchinger. He came with his family on the SS Union from Bremen, Germany to the port of New York, New, York arriving on April 16, 1870. The family consisted of his parents and 5 children. They settled on a farm near Lake Henry, Minnesota. He married Catherine Christine Kind on September 5, 1876 in Melrose, Minnesota. Herman and Catherine had 8 children, 7 lived to adulthood. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 daughters, Katharina (infant) and Mary (Henry) Martin; 1 brother, Gustav (Augusta Leopold); and 2 sisters, Friedericka (Frederick) Holler and Friederike (infant). He was survived by his wife; 3 sons, William (Elizabeth Ackerman), Herman (Helen Gruman), and Albert (Minnie Ferber); 3 daughters, Emilie (Reinhard) Richter, Christine (Hubert) Flint, and Emma (Gerhard) Krueger; 1 brother, William (Johanna Faust); and 1 sister, Augusta (Carl) Martin. He was buried on May 3, 1936.
Herman Barchenger, Sr., Succumbs to Injury
Herman Barchenger, a former resident of Oliver county, passed away in a Fargo hospital last Thursday. He had been ailing for several years, and last week he suffered a stroke, causing him to fall and fracture his right hip. Complications set in, which caused his death.
After a service at Grace Lutheran Church in Fargo on Saturday, the corpse was sent to Hannover, where another service was held for relatives and friends in Oliver county on Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in the Hannover cemetery, the Rev. L.T. Wohfeil officiating.
The deceased was born of Christoph Barchenger and his wife, Sophie nee Gegel, in Saxony, Germany on January 7th, 1850. He came to America in 1871 to file on a homestead at Lake Henry, Minnesota. After five years, on Septí 5th, 1876, he married Katherine Kind of Melrose, Minnesota and to this union, eight children were born. In 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Barchenger moved to Hannover, North Dakota, where they resided until 1930 at which time they moved o Fargo to make their home with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Krueger. He attained the age of 86 years, 3 months and 23 years.
Mr. Barchenger is survived by his widow, three sons, William of Fargo, H.L. of Dickinson, and Albert of Hannover, three daughters, Mrs. Hubert Flint and Mrs. G.J. Krueger of Fargo and Mrs. R.C. Richter, Albany, Minnesota, thirty-six grandchildren and nine great grand-children, one brother, William Barchenger of Long Prairie, Minnesota, and one sister, Mrs. Auguste Martin of Browerville, Minnesota. Two daughters, one an infant and the other, Mrs. H.C. Martin, and one grandson Norman Barchenger, preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were: H.H. Albers, T.H. Albers, Wm. Hintz, Sr., E.H. Henke, H.E. Henke and Dick Bargman
Out-of-the county relatives who attended the rites included Mr. and Mrs. G.J.
Krueger, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Flint and daughter Laverne, Mr. and Mrs. Wm J. Barchenger and daughter Marion, Mr. and Mrs. Wm J Barchenger, Jr., and Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Barchenger, all of Fargo, N. Dak., and Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Barchenger and son Bobby and Billy of Dickinson.
The deceased was a favorite with many people in this community and made friends wherever he went. He was a man of sterling qualities and will be missed by relatives and friends.
