Cecil Winfred Barker
Birth: May 6, 1888
Burnet County
Texas, USA
Death: Oct. 6, 1967
Carrizo Springs
Dimmit County
Texas, USA

Cecil Winfred Barker attended Texas University while employed as an Ice Plant manager in Austin, Texas. He became interested in spinach and vegetable growing as a result of doing business with area farmers.

About 1925 he moved to Devine, Texas with his wife Elma Lela Hughes Barker and during this time period enjoyed whitetail deer hunting in Dimmit, Maverick and Web counties. This prompted him to take employment managing onion growing in Asherton, Dimmit, county, Texas around 1928. He later hunted deer and elk in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. His employer took bankruptcy and the court left him Cecil with an onion packing shed and several months short of his earnings.

A local bank financed a farm lease at Big Wells, Texas in 1930 which became very successful growing onions as well as other vegetables.

He then built a home in Big Wells in 1933 and moved his family there. The depression did not seem to hurt vegetable farmers and he prospered. Cecil's great break came in 1939 when a nation-wide freeze killed or damaged nearly all the spinach in the USA. He had a large crop of spinach and good Lord sent him 5 or 6 inches of snow which protected his crop from the freeze. Snow is extremely rare in the area. This large profit enabled him to buy his farm in 1940 and expand to farm and land of 4800 acres in 1941.

These accomplishments were shared by his helper and loving wife Elma Lela Hughes Barker a dedicated mother and Methodist Church worker in the small town of 450 in Big Wells, Texas.
