Mary Colley was born before the Civil War to a family who owned a plantation and slaves in Mechlenbeg, VA. The Colley family lost everything as a result of the Civil War. They left Virginia after the war and moved to Missouri to start a new life. That is where Mary met and married John Franklin Chavose. Mary was never able to forget the Civil War and stayed firmly on the side of the Confederacy hoping that "the South would rise again".
