Deceased Name: BRAWNER
BRAWNER, ALEXANDER GOEBEL "SONNY" Born February 25, 1937 to Alec and Clella Brawner in Phoenix, Arizona. Lived briefly in Carlsbad, New Mexico before moving with his family to San Diego. A 1955 graduate of Hoover High School, Sonny went into the Plasterer's Union as an apprentice working for C.R. Treat Plastering and E.F. Brady Co. Sonny loved drag racing his '58 Chevy at Paradise Valley Raceway in the 50's for Campbell Chevrolet and the Stormin' Stoves Racing Team. In 1967, he was hired by the air cargo company Airlift International to fly DC-7's full of cargo to Vietnam. This job was a dream come true, a favorite time in his life. Sonny started A.G. Brawner Plastering in the 70's, which he operated until his passing, his favorite job being the completion of Sea Port Village, in Downtown San Diego. Sonny was the Union apprentice instructor at Mesa College during the early 70's, and an Honorary Deputy with San Diego County Sheriffs Department. Sonny enjoyed coaching his boys at La Mesa National Little League where he also served as President. He was an avid pilot flying many forms of airplanes and his prized Bell 47 helicopter. Traveling in his motor home, camping in the Laguna Mountains, going to the Over-the-line tournament, the Miramar Air Show, telling jokes to his numerous friends, and playing with his dogs were among his favorite things to do. Sonny is survived by his wife, Bea; sons, Scott Brawner of El Cajon, Shawn Brawner of Temecula, and daughter, Susan Brawner of Los Angeles; granddaughter Kambra Brawner of El Cajon; sister Patricia Duey of La Mesa; and his favorite brother-in-law, Ray Treat of La Mesa. Sonny touched so many lives and he was loved by so many. Even in his passing, it was his desire to have any possible organs donated to help others. He will be sorely missed. Memorial service to be held Friday, July 12, 2002, 11:30am at Shadow Mountain Community Church, 2100 Greenfield Drive, El Cajon, CA 92019. All are welcome. We request all guests wear brightly colored clothing, as this is what Sonny would have preferred. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in tribute of Alex G. Brawner to: The City of Hope National Medical Center: Attn: Central Processing, 1500 Duarte Ave., Duarte, CA 91010.
