William Lewis Bowers was the son of George Bower. He grew up in Botetourt County, and enlisted as a private in the 22nd Virginia Infantry, Co. I on May 1, 1862, White Sulfur Springs, VA (now West VA.) He rose to the rank of sergeant, and served honorably throughout the War Between the States, for Virginia, and the Confederacy. After the war, he returned home and married Sarah Ann Simmons, and together they raised seven children. He was a farmer and also worked at the Lignite Mines in Botetourt County. He is buried next to his wife in the Parr Family Cemetery, in what is now the national forest.
