Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer killed in the line of duty near Millet, Alberta. Constable Agostinho was investigating a motor vehicle accident when a 5-ton transport truck rammed into his patrol car parked on the side of a busy highway. Another officer in a separate cruiser was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The truck driver was charged with (and later found guilty of) dangerous driving causing death.
Aged 45, Cst. Agostinho had served in the RCMP for nine years and was posted to the Wetaskiwin detachment. He was also the Commanding Officer of 831 Leduc Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. Previously, he served in the Canadian military as an air force pilot flying search and rescue missions. He is survived by his wife Cheryl and their children Stephanie and James.
A regimental funeral was held on July 8, 2005 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Leduc, AB.
Cst. Agostinho is honoured on the Canadian Police & Peace Officers' Memorial in Ottawa.
On June 6, 2009 a playground and park space in the Southfork community in Leduc was built and named Constable Jose Agostinho Park to honour his memory. A Regional RCMP Colour Party and members of the RCMP, Air Cadets and city officials attended the dedication ceremony.
