Parents were Jason Dodd and Mary McDonald. He married Margaret Frances Patterson Wilson in 1864 in Tennessee. They had 6 children: William Jason, Martha Mary, James Brownlow, Charles, John McKinley, Jr., and Otto B. Served as a Corporal in the Union Army during the Civil War in Company D, Unit 6 of the Tennessee Calvary. He also served as Sheriff in Ripley County, Missouri.
From his obituary:
The Prospect-News, Thursday, 16 April 1914 John M. DODD of Gatewood, died at home Monday night after extended illness. "He was about 65-66" Used to be Township Constable and also served one term as Sheriff. Civil War veteran and GAR member. Leaves wife and four sons and one daughter; Jason, James, Charles, John and Mrs. W. B. HUDSON. Buried in Gatewood cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
