In August 1863 Stephen Balter came from Bromburg, Prussia, to America Aboard the Prince Albert from Hamburg when his children were small. He lived at LaPorte, Indiana, for many years. He received his naturalization papers at LaPort in May 1872. He was married three times. He had five children by his first wife, who died in Germany. The children were Julius, Edward, Augusta, Ida and Rhinehold. He was married the third time when he advertised for a wife. Fannie Bird from Chicago, a sweet little German woman. Stephen moved to Chicago, and being old, lost his job as cabinet maker; so, he moved to Brainard, Kansas, and lived there until he died. He and Fanny are buried in the Brainard cemetary close to his son, Edward Balter.
