Constable John Clayton "Jess" Billings was shot and killed in his own vehicle just outside his house as he was getting ready to go to a picture show. The suspect waited outside Constable Billings' home and ambushed him as he was getting in his vehicle firing three shots, one striking him in the head and two in his body. The suspect ran towards the river and escaped but was subsequently shot and killed in a gun battle by another deputy less than two years later. The suspect had been arrested by Constable Billings twice before and was known as a notorious rum runner who was also wanted on charges of assault to murder and criminal assault in Hidalgo County.
Constable John "Jess" Billings was survived by his wife, Florence, and a son, John Clayton, Jr. who was born on October 25, 1926, 14 days after his death. He was preceded in death by a son, Autry.
