WEST HARWICH James C. Buckle, age 90, of West Harwich, formerly of Wakefield, died peacefully at his home on May 23, 2011. Born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in Stoneham, he was the son of the late James and Mable (Taylor) Buckle.

James enlisted in the Army during WWII and fought in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received the Silver Star Medal and two Service Stars, and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. His four years of military service left a deep impression on him and he devoted much of his life to reuniting his comrades of the Company E 182nd Infantry and compiling the military history of his Company.

Upon returning to civilian life, James moved to Wakefield where he lived, married and raised his family. He first was employed by the A&P Grocery Store and then, for over 25 years, he was a letter carrier for the Wakefield Post Office. Upon retirement, he moved to the Cape and has been a resident of Brewster and West Harwich for the past 25 years.

As a result of having been brought up in the Depression, James was very conservative in his opinions and politics. He was a member of the N.R.A., an avid reader and world traveler. He was also a devoted, loving caretaker to the three women who predeceased him.

He was the husband of the late Ada Louise (Jillett) and the late Frances (Doucette) and the cherished companion of the late Helen C. Smith. He was the father of James Buckle of Florida and the late Janet Key formerly of Wakefield. He is survived by four grandchildren; a niece Shirley Speck of Stoneham; and a close extended family including devoted, special friends and neighbors, James and Susan Dolan.

Funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Wakefield United Methodist Church, 273 Vernon St., Wakefield, followed by burial in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield. Visitation: Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. at Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., Stoneham.
