Ashley Ann Brink, 4, daughter of David M. Patricia Brink, Sandusky CR 204, died Friday at the Children's Hospital of Milwaukee, WI. She had been ill with leukemia the past 1 1/2 years.
In November she underwent a bone-marrow transplant at the hospital in the effort to stop the spread of the disease, The transplant was considered the last hope for remission.
She was diagnosed as having acute myeloblastic leukemia, a rare form of leukemia. Less than 20% of all children diagnosed with leukemia have that form of disease.
According to Audry Hutchinson at the St. Paul Lutheran Church the little girl seemed to be doing well after the transplant, but problems developed and she was re-admitted to the hospital on Dec. 3. She appeared to be improving and was allowed to leave the hospital for a few hours on Christmas to spend time with her family at the Ronald McDonald House there.
Fund-raising efforts to help the Green Creek Township family fight the girl's disease were held in the Fremont and Clyde areas, and a fund to help pay the medical bills was established at Clyde Savings Bank where her mother worked as a part time teller.
The child was born June 5, 1983, in Fremont. She attended St. Paul Lutheran Church Sunday School and the story hour at Clyde Public Library.
She is survived by her parents, David M. and Patricia {Jones} Brink and brothers, Jeremy and Joshua, both at home. Also surviving are her grandparents, Don M. & Delores Jones of Clyde, James and Pauline Brink and Hilda Caris all of Fremont.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 am. at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, with burial in McPherson Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Little Mary's Hospitality House in Welliston, Michigan, where terminally ill patients and their families may spend vacations were free of charge. Memorials may also may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia Foundation.
