Lillian was a daughter of William F. and Lillian nee Garner Jenkins born about 1915-16. When her parents' marriage crumbled, Lillian and her siblings were raised in a number of homes of various relatives and with their parents and their parents' new mates. As the eldest girl, Lillian may have been under unique pressure to help raise the other girls and perhaps to assist their mother who was not always a well person.
She is remembered as "Aunt Nunu" by her nieces and nephews, who recall her as lively and funny.
Lillian married Fulton Schroeder. They appear together on the 1940 census of Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on Cedar Lane. Lillian (age 24) and Fulton (age 26, a truck driver for a coal business) live with Lillian's little sister, Alice Jenkins (age 20).
Later, Lillian married or co-habited with Kenneth Gross. Later still, she seems to have lived with another gent. Late in her life, as her health began to fail her, Lillian lived with her sister, my grandmother Dorothy.
Lillian had no children.
My uncle recalls her probably passing in 1965-66. State death records at this writing, are available until 1963, and she is not within them so must have died afterwards. After initially beating it, Lillian died of breast cancer probably in the 1960's. She'd been under the care of a dubious physician who told her she simply had the flu. That doctor later lost his medical license when it was found he was addicted to painkillers.
Lillian's date of death is being sought.
Research note: Holcombe Funeral Home of Trappe did not handle her arrangements as they did for her mother, and said they do not have her in their records under Garner or Schroeder. If she had another married name, we do not know it to ask them to check. We know where her ashes were scattered, but it would be nice to find some dates for her.
