Bessie authored the 20 page genealogy manuscript named "John Layton Family," dtd 30 Aug 1972, that countless Layton descendants use to trace their Georgia ancestors back to Sampson County, North Carolina, in the late 1700s. Bessie is also the author of the 188 page genealogy book titled "Elton, Layton, Peacock, Shurling and Allied Families of Washington County, Ga., 1750-1950," 1972.
Bessie was enumerated living in her parents house for the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 Fed censuses at Northern Twp., Washington Co., GA. In the 1940 Fed census she was listed as having fours years of college and her occupation given as "public school teacher." She was a resident of Atlanta in 1935 according to the 1940 Fed census and the 1960 Atlanta city directory listed her as a resident with the occupation of office secretary. Numerous Atlanta city directories between 1936 and 1950 listed her as a school teacher, and later as a school principal.
