Mr. John Benjamin "JB" Akins
STATESBORO, Ga. - Mr. John Benjamin "JB" Akins, age 78, died on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The Bulloch County native was a graduate of Stilson High School and attended the Martha Berry College. Mr. Akins was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War. He managed the Bethany Home in Millen, Ga., before owning and operating nursing homes in Georgia and South Carolina over several years. Mr. Akins retired in 1980 and currently owns and leases Syl-View Health Care in Sylvania and Ridgecrest Nursing Home in Ridgeland, S.C. He was a member of the Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Eula Akins.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Faye Rountree Akins of Statesboro; a daughter, Vickie Dearing of Gainesville, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Beth Akins and Bill and Nelly Akins, all of Brooklet, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Jeremy (Lauren) Akins, Julie Dearing, Amanda (Billy) Latsko, Lindsey Akins, Lauren Akins, Katie Akins, Jesse Akins and Bryer Akins.
The funeral service was held in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Keith Hamilton officiating. Interment Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Elder Randy Waters officiating.
Pallbearers were Edwin Akins, Grady Aycock, Billy Latsko, Steve Byrd, Stephen Currin and Jimmy Hayes.
Honorary pallbearers were Earl Dabbs, Steve Rushing and Steve Cannon.
