Margaret E. Barnett, 96, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. She was born April 11, 1908, in Winfield, Mo., to Walter W. and Sara Ann (Whitlock) Clower. She married Charles Barnett on March 28, 1942, in Bel-Air, Md. He survives. A retired schoolteacher, she was employed at Alhambra schools and at Bethalto schools, where she taught English, math and band. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Shurtleff College and her master's degree in art from Washington University. She was the first woman band director in Illinois. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alton, she was also a member of the Greater Alton Woman's Golf Association, where she was the champion in 1955 and 1959. In addition to her husband, surviving are three adopted children, a son, Jay W. Barnett, and his wife, Barbara, of O'Fallon, Ill.; two daughters, Sally A. Taylor and her husband, Dr. Bruce Taylor, of Pueblo, Colo., and Mary M. Moxey of Atlanta; six grandchildren, Claire, CJ, Kim Jr., Annie, Alex and Catie; and a brother, Dr. Eugene W. Clower of Alton. She also adopted four Korean-American orphans who survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; an adopted son, Kim Barnett; and a sister, Catherine Smith. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory in Alton, with Pastor David Olson officiating. Inurnment will be at Upper Alton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian church of Alton or the Salvation Army.
