Dorothy Alford of Springfield, IL. passed away on Monday October 15, 2012. She was born to Harry S. & Hildur Stranger Aldridge in Highland Park Illinois on May 9Th 1920. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, and her sister Louise Aldridge of Evanston IL.
Dorothy attended Northwestern University and graduated with honors in Bachelor of Arts in Education, and later graduated from Clark University with a Masters degree in Education. In 1942 she volunteered for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. She was promoted through the W.A.A.C.'s and attended officers candidate school. Attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant, she was then transferred to the Women's Army Auxiliary Air Force and was promoted to the rank of Captain where she served on General MacArthur's Pacific Command staff as a Japanese translator. After World War 2, accepting a teaching position she relocated to Tremont Illinois and met the love of her life, James "Jim" Alford.
Married in 1950 they later moved to Springfield where Dorothy taught at Laketown Elementary School until her retirement in 1973. Dorothy was a highly accomplished amateur golfer, avid stamp collector and easily earned the love, respect and admiration of all she had became acquainted with. Dorothy is fondly remembered by her cousins, Alfred Aldridge and family of Libertyville IL., Susan MacMillan and family of Lake Bluff IL., Helen Anne Bolger & Merlyn Melady of Toronto Canada, her close personal friends, Henny DeBruin, Donald (Hoot) Day, the Staley family and many other second cousins, friends, her students, and neighbors.
